The Catholic Justice and Peace Department (CJPD) of the Diocese of Kakamega is the social justice and advocacy arm of the Catholic Church. It operates under the guidance of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) through the Catholic Justice and Peace Commission (CJPC) framework.
CJPD Kakamega seeks to create a society where justice, peace, and human dignity are respected and promoted by empowering individuals and communities to live in harmony with one another and with God’s creation.
The Catholic Justice and Peace Department was established in Kakamega Diocese as part of the Church’s commitment to social transformation. Over the years, CJPD has played a vital role in civic education, voter awareness, peacebuilding, human rights advocacy, and environmental stewardship.
Through partnerships with local parishes, government agencies, and faith-based organizations, CJPD has contributed significantly to promoting peace and good governance across the Western region of Kenya — especially in times of political tension and social unrest.
To see a society where justice, peace, and human dignity prevail in accordance with Gospel values.
To promote justice, peace, and reconciliation through training, advocacy, and community empowerment guided by the Catholic Social Teachings.
Bishop of Kakamega Diocese
“As Christians, we are called to be ambassadors of peace and justice. CJPD reminds us that our faith must be seen in action — in the way we treat others, protect the weak, and stand for the truth.”
Diocesan CJPD Coordinator
“Our mission is to empower communities to take responsibility for their social, economic, and spiritual well-being. We believe peace and justice begin with the heart transformed by Christ.”
We implement various programs aimed at fostering justice, peace, and social transformation, including:
The Lenten Campaign is an annual nationwide initiative led by the Catholic Justice and Peace Department, encouraging Christians to reflect on themes of justice, peace, and charity during Lent. The campaign promotes practical action — through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving — to support social transformation.
In Kakamega Diocese, the campaign supports ongoing CJPD activities such as civic education, peace forums, youth empowerment, and environmental restoration projects. It is a reminder that true faith must be expressed through love and service to others.
