Goal: Improve socio-economic resilience and wellbeing of widows and their families.

Background

Funded in partnership with Vivamos Mejor (Switzerland), Wezesha Mjane began as a targeted response to the vulnerability of widows in Mumias East & West and surrounding sub-counties.

Objectives

• Organise widows into solidarity groups to access skills training and micro-enterprise support.
• Improve household food security via sustainable agricultural practices.
• Enhance health, nutrition and sanitation at household level.

Target beneficiaries

Approximately 1,100 widows organized in solidarity groups across Mumias East & West (project baseline cohort).

Core activities

• Formation and capacity building of solidarity groups (group governance, savings & internal lending).
• Agricultural training (kitchen gardening, soil conservation, small-scale livestock management).
• Nutrition education, maternal/child health awareness and jigger control interventions.
• Micro-grants and linkages to local markets for income-generating activities.

Outcomes & Impact

• Increased household food diversity and improved monthly incomes among beneficiary groups.
• Reduction in jigger infestation and improved household sanitation in supported communities.
• Stronger community networks providing psychosocial support for widows.

Goal: Increase access to secondary and tertiary education for vulnerable bright students.

Scope & Background

Launched in 2019, the fund provides bursaries, school supplies, mentoring and follow-up support. It targets orphaned, vulnerable children and those from ultra-poor households.

Objectives

• Support students with school fees, uniforms, and learning materials through secondary and tertiary education.
• Provide career guidance and mentorship to promote completion and employability.

Beneficiaries & Achievements

Since inception, the fund has supported dozens of students (secondary and university level). The program tracks attendance, grades, and wellbeing to ensure sustained success.

Goal: Build climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods through conservation and climate-smart farming.

Objectives

• Promote tree planting and community woodlots to restore degraded landscapes.
• Train smallholder farmers on soil conservation, agroecology, and water harvesting.
• Encourage sustainable income-generating practices that protect natural resources.

Activities

• Community tree planting campaigns and establishment of demonstration plots.
• Farmer field schools on composting, mulching, and intercropping.
• Promotion of energy-saving stoves and small-scale value addition (post-harvest handling).

Outcomes

• Thousand+ seedlings planted in targeted catchments (example figure; adjust to real data).
• Improved yields for households using climate-smart practices.
